Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa Reviews Feasibility of Shahdara Dam Project to Address Islamabad’s Water Needs

ISLAMABAD: February 3, 2026: A meeting regarding the Shahdara Dam project was held under the chairmanship of Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting was attended by CDA Board Member Admin Talat Mahmood, Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, Director General Islamabad Water, Deputy Commissioner CDA and senior officers of Islamabad Water. Briefing Chairman CDA on water management projects, the relevant officers informed that WAPDA has completed the feasibility study process for the Shahdara Dam project and the complete feasibility report for this project has been shared with CDA. During the briefing, it was said that the feasibility report has prepared initial estimates for land acquisition for the dam, water conveyance, water treatment plant, and other aspects. It was briefed that the Shahdara Dam will have the capacity to store water over an area of 25 acres. Similarly, this project will have the capacity to provide 10 million gallons of water per day to the citizens of Islamabad. The briefing further said that work on the detailed design will commence immediately upon completion of the feasibility report for the Shahdara Dam project. It was also briefed that the PC-1 for this project will be submitted for approval soon after its preparation. Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa directed that a formal survey be conducted by SUPARCO prior to the acquisition of land for the dam. He said that all matters related to land acquisition should be resolved transparently and in accordance with legal requirements. He further said that the feasibility report and detailed design of this project should be presented to the committee established for resolving the water issues of the twin cities for approval. Furthermore, the Dotara Dam project was also discussed in the meeting. During the briefing, it was informed that work on the feasibility report for the Dotara Dam project is ongoing. Chairman CDA said that these projects will play a significant role in meeting the water needs of the Federal Capital, Islamabad. He added that ensuring uninterrupted water supply in the Federal Capital Islamabad is among our top priorities.
