CDA Initiates Electric Tram and E-Bus Project to Promote Green Transport in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: January 28, 2026: A meeting was held at the CDA Headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, to promote an environmentally friendly and modern public transport system in the Federal Capital, Islamabad, regarding the Electric Tram and E-Bus project. The meeting was attended by CDA Board Member Admin Talat Mahmood, Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon and other senior officers of CDA. The meeting discussed the practical implementation and infrastructure of the Electric Tram and Electric Bus project in the Capital City, Islamabad. It was decided in the meeting to conduct a feasibility study for the Electric Tram project in Islamabad City at the earliest. Under the Electric Tram project, modern facilities including a depot, parking, charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities will be established for the trams. The project will be implemented in accordance with a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS). This will be a fully modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly project based on contemporary lines. The project will be integrated with a modern transit system of Islamabad. Chairman CDA directed that the system for this project be made fully digital and cashless. He instructed that the acquisition of carbon credits for this eco-friendly transport project be ensured during the planning phase. Chairman CDA said that a feasibility study should be conducted to connect the Electric Tram project with important locations in the Federal Capital, Islamabad and particularly with the Islamabad International Airport. He said that in this regard, the latest ridership data and future demand should be taken into account. Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa said that this historic initiative in the Federal Capital, Islamabad, will not only provide modern facilities to citizens but will also help in reducing environmental pollution. He further said that all resources are being utilized to provide the citizens of the Federal Capital, Islamabad, with excellent, affordable and environment friendly travel facilities.
